Ibiza Campo Loft – A Piece Of Paradise

Ibiza Campo Loft was once an old abandoned warehouse on a remote mountain field in the northern part of Ibiza. But when interior architect Jurjen van Hulzen, The owner of Ibiza Interiors and The Nieuw, saw the structure and location of the building, the concept for the design was born. What formerly served as a workshop and storage, has now been turned into a contemporary design guesthouse.

The original building had been unused for many years and was in very poor condition with no electricity, water and sewage, but only walls and part of the roof. All this left the architects a clean frame to work on starting from the necessities.  Water was provided from a private well and solar panels were installed for hot water, while floor heating and electricity are making the house completely self-sustainable.

The location and structure of the building set the tone for the whole concept, which was to keep the character of the traditional Ibizan architecture. Concrete columns and steel beams were holding up the traditional roof, which was made from locally sourced Sabina wood. The contrast between rustic and industrial formed the concept for the rest of the design. That’s also how the house got its name ‘Ibiza Campo Loft’, which basically means ‘industrial open living space on the field’.

The loft has been designed to become a comfortable and modern space. A big open space on the south side of the building connects to a spacious private terrace with views of the valley. The bedrooms occupy the two cooler, north corners of the house, while the bathroom features interior windows facing the living room fireplace and views of the natural environment surrounding the house. The free-standing bath sits on a herringbone pattern floor made from traditional terracotta tiles, while concrete floors cover the rest of the house. As with its Sabina beams, all the materials used in the project are local, except the powder coated steel used on the window frames, cupboard and doors. The pool outside is surrounded by a beautiful pebbled deck that respects Ibiza Campo Loft’s natural setting, while the yoga platform on the roof is embraced by the fruit trees and the house’s vegetable garden. All this gives the house a basic, natural but high-end character designed by and for design lovers.
