Where to stay in Amsterdam: a selection of beautiful design hotels

Few cities meld history with modern urban flair like Amsterdam.

Seventeenth-century buildings and architectural innovations are peeking behind every corner as well as design hotels. The city offers vast range of hotels to choose from, but I have some personal favorites to share with you.

CitizenM Hotel

This hotel, for me, was the perfect choice when deciding where to stay. Design collaboration with Vitra provided the furniture and concrete designed the rest. The hotel is perfect for nomads, design lovers and open-minded travelers. All rooms are the same with extra-large bed and unique design for great sleep and transparent shower lovers.

Hotel Not Hotel

The name implies an uncertain state of accommodations and some might find the Hotel Not Hotel a perplexing oddity. All the the 15 themed rooms are a work of art with its own creator, story, and identity. For example, sleeping in a secret bookcase or in the Amsterdam Tram Cart room, just large enough to accommodate a king-sized bed and not much more. A genuine unique experience.

Maison Rika

Rika is short for Ulrika Lundgren, who has steadily built her design presence in Amsterdam and beyond. Overlooking the canals, everything in the Maison has Rika’s distinct style signature, from finds she brought back from her travels to the customized furniture. On the ground floor, you will find the reception area, a lifestyle store and the occasional pop-up shop.

Conservatorium

Located just across from the cultural heart of Amsterdam’s Museumplein, this Neo-Gothic hotel could be mistaken for one of the numerous surrounding museums. In fact, history reveals both a cultural and monetary heredity, the building originally serving as a bank, and then later hosting the Amsterdam’s Sweelinck Music Conservatorium by which the hotel owes its name.

Hotel V Fizeaustraat

The Hotel V Fizeaustraat pays homage to the building’s history and retains its authenticity so that you really can experience the 1970s atmosphere of the building’s original time. If there was a perfect balance of modern and vintage interior design, this hotel would be it. Mirjam Espinosa mixes the two in terms of furniture, decor and details.

Generator Hostel

The hostel, a former health sciences building and zoological museum, overlooks the Oosterpark with its ancient willow trees and exotic birds. The preserved building’s C-shaped floor plan includes various original features such as a marble staircase, stained glass transoms, terrazzo floors and intricate interior brickwork. The original auditorium is now a bar with raked seating and typical green reading lamps. The 168 rooms are built for respectful social interaction, not mass tourism. But while there are bunk beds, there are also private rooms with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and intimate terraces.
